Forum review: A new era for understanding

The meeting of eminent physicians, researchers and general practitionersinvolved in the study, diagnosis, management and care of this most complex of diseases has established a new era for understanding. The scientific presentations on the pathogenesis this disorder, by Professor Kenny De Meirleir, Emeritus Professor Barrie Marmion, Dr Richard Kwiatek, Dr Don Staines, Dr John Duley and Dr Richard Burnet have given significant insights to the mechanisms that are at play, causing the myriad of symptoms that these patients experience. The presentations of the ME/CFS diagnostic and treatment protocols as presented by Professor Kenny De Meirleir have given us a wonderful tool for the establishment of ME/CFS as an organic syndrome without the stigma that have previously been ascribed. The unanimous acceptance of the Canadian ME/CFS Guidelines, will revolutionise the management of ME/CFS in the future, and its adaptation by all Australian physicians is strongly recommended.
